Fast & Furious 6

With the release of Fast & Furios 6, I decided to do what I always do when a franchise has a new instalment, I watched all of the previous movies from the franchise, I even do it for video games too. I started on tuesday last by watching the first 2 movies…

And I finished watching them yesterday, just in time for Fast & Furious 6, that I got to watch this morning.

Dont worry, I’m not going to review all of the films.

The Fast and the Furious franchise started in 2001 with the eponymous first film and since then we have been given a further 5 films with talks that a further 3 films on the horizon and a possible spin-off with Dwayne Johnson’s character.

The movies primarily center around Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) or Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) who commit or prevent crimes all while racing beautiful cars of many different styles, years, and performance. Even though the sequels seem to be endless, the quality of the stories still remains very high, in my opinion the stories have gotten better with each new addition, and I was really looking forward to watching Fast & Furious 6.

Here’s the trailer for Fast & Furious 6

Warning: Spoilers beyond this point!

The story for the film starts when Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) comes to Dominic and asks him and his team to help catch a criminal called Shaw (Luke Evans).  Shaw has been comitting crimes all across Asia & Europe and is creating a weapon that could cause a massive loss of life.  Hobbs uses a picture of Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), who is not only alive but helping Shaw commit these heists.

For the chance to find Letty, Dom and the team head to London to catch Shaw, on one condition – legal pardons for the entire team. The first encounter with Shaw goes bad for the team with most of their cars getting wrecked and Dom getting shot by Letty, but they got closer than anyone else.

After some investigation, they find Shaw’s engineer, a foot chase ensues and 2 fights, between Letty & Riley (Gina Carano) and Tej (Ludacris), Roman (Tyrese Gibson) & Jah (Joe Taslim). Dom races Letty and wins, and narrowly escapes death after a surprise visit from Shaw.

“My brother used to say, every man has to have a code. Mine, is precision. The team is nothing but pieces you switch out until you get the job done. But you, you’re loyal to a fault. Your code is about Family. That’s great in the holidays, but it makes you predictable. In our line of work predictable makes you vulnerable. I can reach out and break you any time I want.” –Owen Shaw

Following Shaw on CCTV they eventually find Shaw’s base, too late to catch Shaw, but finding a vital clue as to where Shaw will strike next.

A chase ensues in Spain, where Shaw unveils a tank.  After much destruction and death Dom and Brian are finally able to take down the tank and Shaw. After a little surprise and a twist, Shaw gets released.  With Letty now on team Toretto, the crew goes after Shaw, to put an end to him. Shaw tries to escape using a russian cargo plane, after the crew chase him down, Dom, Hobbs and Brian board the plane, and a fight ensues, while the rest of the crew try to ground the plane, eventually succeeding, although Gisele (Gal Gadot) is lost in the process.

The team receive their pardons and return home, with Han (Sung Kang) finally heading for Tokyo, to meet his inevitable demise, which we learn was orchestrated by Shaw’s older brother, setting up the story for Fast 7.

Dominic Toretto, you don’t know me, but you’re about to.” – Ian Shaw (The brother)

Fast & Furious 6 was a really enjoyable movie, possibly the best one in the franchise.  The story is well thought out, but the pacing for the first half of the movie is a little slow, however the chemistry between the characters makes up for that.  The fight scenes are very impressive and very enjoyable to watch, especially the 2 fights in the London underground.  The car scenes are as always exciting, fun and very entertaining. There is plenty of humour and drama to balance with the action and it makes for a really enjoyable movie, I think I will be paying another visit to see it in the cinema!
