This month saw the release of the seventh instalment of the Fast & Furious franchise. As I have done in the past, I decided to re-watch the previous 6 movies, so that I would be up to date with what has come before.
In a lead up to my review and recap of Fast & Furious 7, I thought I would run through the details of the previous 6 movies.
The first movie introduces us to the Fast & Furious family. Brian (Paul Walker) is a cop undercover trying to find out who’s been hijacking trucks. Dom Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) crew are the main suspects, so Brian infiltrates the crew after saving Dom from the cops. After finding out the truckers have armed themselves and Dom’s crew have taken one last job, Brian reveals his secret, and after returning to L.A. , Brian lets Dom escape, giving Dom his car, after Doms is destroyed in a drag race accident.
2 Fast 2 Furious takes place not long after the original, this time we are following only Brian from the original, who is on the run after letting Dom escape in the first movie. He’s in Miami and the FBI have tracked him down, asking for his help bringing down drug lord Verone (Cole Hauser) in exchange for a clean record. Brian enlists the help of Roman (Tyrese Gibson) with some technical help from Tej (Ludacris). Some more great driving takes place and the duo of Brian and Roman, help to stop Verone, clear their records and even leave with some money.
The Fast & the Furious – Tokyo Drift (2006)
Fast & the Furious – Tokyo Drift features none of the characters previously featured in the franchise. Sean (Lucas Black) is sent to Tokyo as a last attempt to set him right after destroying a housing development during an illegal street race. In Tokyo he discovers drift racing and starts working for Han (Sung Kang) and learns to drift, so he can make some money. Sean falls for a beautiful girl, which puts him at odds with DK (Brian Tee). After DK finds Han’s been stealing from him he chases him, during which Han is t-boned by a Mercedes and Han dies in the ensuing fire. Sean challenges DK to a drift race, winning and leaving DK exiled from Tokyo.
Fast & Furious takes place after 2F2F. While working in the Dominican Republic with Letty (Michelle Rodriquez) and a new crew, Dom decides it’s too dangerous, and leaves so his crew can return to the US. During his absence Letty teams up with FBI agent Brian, embedding herself with Mexican drug crew led by Braga (John Ortiz), in exchange for amnesty for Dom. Letty is killed after completing a job. Dom returns to L.A. to take Braga down. Brian goes undercover as a driver for Braga too and after stealing from Braga and a high octane race across the border and through a mountain tunnel, they capture Braga. However, the LA court decide Dom should still be imprisoned.
Following directly from F&F, Dom is on his way to prison, while Brian, Mia and Dom’s crew break him out on the road. Now on the run, they head for Brazil, where Vince (Matt Schulze) has been living. They take a job, stealing cars from a train, Mia takes the GT40, causing a disagreement and Dom & Brian barely escape with their lives. They find out the GT40’s GPS has the location of drug lord Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) cash houses. They decide to take his stash so they can retire for good. Meanwhile Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) of the DSS is searching for Dom. Dom & co are captured by Hobbs and their convoy is attacked by Reyes, turning Hobbs to Dom’s side. They steal Reyes’ vault and escape with it through the streets of Rio, taking out Reyes in the process.
The film opens with the birth of Brian & Mia’s first child. Hobbs finds evidence that Letty is still alive and is working with wanted criminal Owen Shaw (Luke Evans). Hobbs recruits Dom and his crew to help take Shaw down. In London, the crew takes on Shaws people, but their cars are taken out before Shaw can complete his mission. They find out that Letty really is alive and prepare for Shaw. They next encounter Shaw in Spain where he hijacks a tank, and capture him, he escapes with some inside help and the finale takes place around and aboard a giant plane, ending in the death of Gisele (Gal Gadot) and Shaw in a Coma. The film ends with the crew, now reunited with Letty eating BBQ as a family back in L.A.
